Anti-CCP. Medical Information on Anti-Cyclic Citrullinated Peptide
Anti CCP antibodies are potentially important surrogate markers for diagnosis and prognosis in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), because they: * are as sensitive as, and more specific than, IgM rheumatoid factors in early and fully established disease. One study using CCP1 assay showed a sensitivity of 55% and a specificity of 97% for RA in early stage of arthritis. J Rheumatology 2002;29:2074-6 * may predict the eventual development into RA when found in undifferentiated arthritis * are marker of erosive disease in RA * may be detected in healthy individuals years before onset of clinical RA *a positive anti-ccp, a negative RF and clinical signs of RA, diagnosis will likely be RA. If the disease is not actively not present at the time, it is probable that it will develop in the future. *Rely more on the symptoms and signs of RA for a diagnosis if the anti-ccp is negative and the RF is positive. Autoantibody levels represent one parameter in a multi criterion diagnostic process, encompassing both clinical and laboratory based assessments.
